The War of the Wedded by Toni V. Sweeney

About The Book: Axel Redhu, deadly warrior, swears to serve his master in every way for the good of the kingdom. But on one Spring day what his liege—and birth father—asks of him will try Axel’s loyalty to the limit.

From the day of her birth, Astrid Eriksdotter, daughter of Edelrof, Nord King, has been taught duty to king and country. But on a certain day in Spring, she is little prepared for what her father expects of her.

Our Review: The Wars of the Wedded could easily spring from any era, any generation. From “The Battling Bickersons” to “West Side Story” to the “War of the Roses”, this witty and irreverent love story by Toni V. Sweeney reminds us of duty to family and country—often to the sacrifice of self.

On a scale of 1-5, The War of the Wedded deserves a 6.

Desire in Deutschland by Chloe Holiday

…One smoldering look from the sexy American draws Birgitte across the cultural divide into passion she never dreamed of...

About the Book:

Never again. University student Birgitte Schumacher swore off men, after an American GI seduced her, then left Germany for good. But when she runs into a sexy military policeman on the streets of Kaiserslautern, he just might be her ruin.

Just one beer was Lee Klein's plan. Yet when he sees the woman outside the pub, she’s all he wants. Birgitte’s irresistible pull leads him into a steamy rendezvous. He hopes for more until a conflict of interest ignites a culture clash of simmering attraction versus duty, which threatens their affair.

Our Review: Fast paced and fun the author immediately draws the reader into the dilemma between Birgitte and Lee, then keeps up the pace. Using her knowledge and experience with military policies and procedures, the dialogue is crisp and enticing. Torn between duty and a woman he can’t seem to forget, Lee feels he has only one alternative—while Birgitte sees only one way out: to protect her heart, she must stay away from the handsome GI. Smart and sexy, Desire in Deutschland will keep your attention until the very last page.

Based on a scale of 1-5, Desire in Deutschland earns a 4.5.

The Childless King by Toni V. Sweeney

Book 1 of a saga of family: by blood and by love; traditions good and less than; jealously and resentment. This is the Legacy of Leonesse.

About The Book: Once upon a time there were two young men who became friends. One, a prince by birth, the other a peasant on his way to becoming a priest, but life and circumstance threw them together, drove them apart, then brought them back again. This is a story of a prince and a priest and the woman they both loved.

Our Review: Toni V. Sweeney has proven her skills in creating ‘other’ worlds, populated with layered, interesting characters who face immense challenges—and survive in spite of what’s thrown at them. The Childless King, book 1 in The Legacy of Lionesse series, is a beautifully drawn story of life, love and devotion to family, to self, to others.

On a scale of 1-5, The Childless King deserves a 6.

Her Perfect Gentleman by Gail Eastwood

She is the worst thing that could happen to him. He might be the best thing that could happen to her.

 About the Book:

The last thing Christopher Haslitt needs or wants is another involvement with a high-ranking lady. He is still trying to repair both his heart and his reputation after last season’s disaster left him branded as a fortune hunter. Five days in Little Macclow for his friend’s wedding should be only a brief delay on his path to redemption. But he hasn’t counted on spending it with five unmarried daughters of earls, one of whom has her sights set firmly on him!

Lady Honoria deRaymond finds Mr. Haslitt more attractive and charming than any other gentleman of her acquaintance. What’s more, his perfect manners include overlooking her tendency to be impulsive and not always quite proper. She knows the rules; she just has trouble sticking to them. Marriage to a high-ranking peer, as her family expects for her, will mean a highly visible life of constant pressure to conform and behave properly. Could Mr. Haslitt, a baronet’s son, be her means to escape such a fate?

Our Review: As all well-written series do, the characters from previous novels come together, showing the reader the changes in their lives. Her Perfect Gentleman is a meeting up of old friends or long lost family members in a perfect celebration of life. With well-drawn characters, compelling goals, motivation and conflict, not to mention a bang-up ending, this is the best of the three in the Tales of Little Macclow. Well done!

Based on a scale of 1-5, Her Perfect Gentleman deserves a 6.

Lord of Misrule by Gail Eastwood

On Christmas Eve, a vicar’s daughter runs into the Devil himself, or is he just the Lord of Misrule?

About the Book: After causing a scandal in London, Lord Forthhurst is headed home to make amends when he becomes stranded in the tiny village of Little Macclow on Christmas Eve. Before the night is over, he has become thoroughly entangled in the village celebration of the Twelve Days of Christmas, and fully intrigued by the vicar’s daughter.

Cassie Tamworth has been raised to expect the worst from members of the aristocracy. Can Lord Forthhurst be the love of her life? Or is he a devil, as he claims?

Our Review: With a somewhat slow beginning to this story, it’s worth the time to read each page in order to grasp this author’s talent for description of the Regency era’s rigid rules and social mores. Adding to this are the colorful descriptions of the individual celebrations involved with 12th Night. Adam Randall may be the devil he claims, but his playful, imaginative side brings a lightness into Cassie’s dim outlook for a future filled with adventure and happiness.

Based on a scale of 1-5, Lord of Misrule earns a 4.5.

Lord of Her Heart by Gail Eastwood

…A charming village, a struggling hero, a woman who risks having her heart broken twice...

 About the Book:

Tom Hepston left the village of Little Macclow fourteen years ago. Now he is back, but he hasn’t come willingly and he has no plans to stay. He’s proud of the naval career he served, but he believes the physical and mental wounds he suffered have made him a madman no woman could—or should—love. As the village prepares to celebrate May Day, he is in danger of becoming re-entangled in a life he already chose to leave behind him.

Sally Royden’s young heart broke when Tom left the first time. She now leads a full life, caring for her sister and serving as the village seamstress. Tom’s experiences have changed him. Will her heart be broken twice—by the same man?

Our Review: This achingly lovely romance between two lonely, deserving people is enhanced by the author’s in-depth descriptions of May Day and all it encompasses. Cheers to an author for her energy and willingness to research the era and it’s times. Brava!

On a scale of 1-5, Lord of Her Heart deserves a 5.
