Curse Quest by TS Snow

Riven kan Ingan: risking all to break a curse

In Book 3 of TS Snow’s fantasy God Chosen saga, Curse Quest, Riven kan Ingan, has at last found peace and happiness only to lose it all to a curse. Compelled to find the source of what is afflicting his ‘forever’ home and the people he’s come to care about, his travels take him back to the land of his birth where he finds family and the meaning of forgiveness—for others as well as himself.

As always, Riven’s trials and travails are overseen by the Weaver of Lives who battles the various Gods and demi-Gods wishing to teach Riven important lessons of life.

As with previous books in the God Chose series, author Snow demonstrates an uncanny talent for world building as well as the diverse, multi-layered characters she creates to populate these new worlds. As always, reading one of Snow’s stories is a treat for the imagination and the heart.

On a scale of 1-5, God Chosen, Curse Quest deserves a 5.

Good Lookin' by T.L. Bequette

From the gang-ravaged streets of inner-city Oakland to the rolling hills of Berkeley, California, attorney Joe Turner defends the most hardened criminals. Confronted with an unlikely murdered in a modern-day whodunnit, Turner’s latest case seems impossible to unravel. At its heart is a decade-old murder and a tangled web of of family, loyalty and devotion that has the trial hanging in the balance. Viewed through the prism of the unique bond of twins, Good Lookin’ asks how far each of us will go to protect the ones we love.

Our Review: Author T.L. Bequette, himself an experienced and valued criminal defense attorney, brings extensive experience and experience to the first of which we hope will be many books in the Joe Turner Mystery series. Using biting humor, the hum-drum of court procedures, Bequette weaves the unspoken communication known only to twins as well as the long term effects of child abuse to this page turner of a story. Lovers of mysteries and suspense will love this one. Well done!

On a scale of 1-5, Good Lookin’ deserves a 6.

Numbers Game

             . . . Making a pass could just mean scoring a second chance . . .

Numbers Game, a contemporary romance, written by author duo Liz Crowe and Desiree Holt, is a current release out of the Scarlet Rose line for the Wild Rose Press.

Duncan Hatcher made several serious mistakes in the past, for which he paid a high price. He now works a recovery program each and every day while transitioning from pro quarterback to coach of a flagging college program. Likewise, sports journalist Olivia Grant made the same mistake as women have for centuries by placing her trust in the wrong man. The price she paid turned out to be as disastrous as those made by Hatch.

Their initial meeting sparks an immediate and intense attraction but each must overcome past mistakes and almost crippling fear of making the same mistake twice. Despite sometimes overwhelming obstacles, the two work together to recover, heal, and move on to the next step in their lives.

Our Review:  What romance enthusiast resists a hunky hero, winning heroine and a second chance at love? Not us. Enhancing this terrific story, set against a colorful background of college sports and the intensity of journalistic rivalry, authors Crowe and Holt crafted two multi-layered characters whose goals, motivation and conflict made for a compelling read from page one. Adding to the mix is fast-paced action, steamy romance, and well-deserved retribution.

On a scale of 1-5, Numbers Game deserves a 6

Bloodscourge by Sydney Winward

A thief with a deadly secret. A vampire willing to do anything for family.

Orphaned at birth, Elisabeta Trelles and her twin brother, Miles, turned early to robbery and pillaging to survive the mean streets. Now, after gaining information on the location of the famed Dragon Egg, Miles insists his sister infiltrate the secretive vampire society of Ichor Knell and the Egg. All Elisabeta wants is a better life for herself and her brother—one of honesty and integrity. Possessing the Egg will help her achieve that goal.

Driven to maintain, preserve and protect the vampire population of Ichor Knell, Dracula is relentless in his duty. His friends, and there are a host, are obsessed with hooking him up with the perfect mate. While family is everything to him—and he might be willing—perfection is difficult to find.

Vampires mate forever. If Elisabeta seduces Dracula, finds the Egg then leaves him, she will in effect rob him of his future because he’ll never be able to take another—and she will still be nothing more than a thief.

Our Review: In this third addition to the Bloodborn series, we are again treated to author Sydney Winward’s enviable ability to create diverse and multi-layered characters as well as building a world rarely seen in other vampire fiction. Ichor Knell comes alive in Bloodscourge, showing its top and undersides and becomes a showcase for the Vampire culture with all its customs and vagaries.

Well done. Very well done!

On a scale of 1-5, Bloodscourge deserves a 6.

Until . . .

The day Talmadge Hammond drifts into the ramshackle Idaho mining camp and back into Noletta Kittridge’s life is the same one she began covered in another man’s blood and accused of his murder. Once, they vowed to love each other, until…

Tal brushes off his unused law degree to save Letty who believes redemption can only come from saving the person who accidentally killed the monster who sold her into slavery. Death is a price she is willing to pay while Tal is compelled to solve the mystery of who did kill the victim.

Our Review: Until . . . is a story of star-crossed lovers separated by duty to country and family, dishonored by ego, pride and greed. Two years after war split them apart, murder brings them together in a dusty Idaho mining camp. Both have debts to pay; neither will relent on the method of repayment.

Devotees of historical fiction will appreciate the fine details of this book. Lovers of a detailed, well-written murder mystery which features a cast of possible killers will adore this book. Until . . . is rich in history, with a beautifully described setting and masterfully drawn characters. Ms. Henderson has done herself proud.

On a scale of 1-5, Until . . . deserves a 6.

The Texas Ranger and the Veterinarian

Texas Ranger Daniel Tanner seeks out veterinarian Henry Manville to identify the cause of death on a local woman. He’s assured the vet has experience in this area and will be willing to help. Imagine Tanner’s surprise when he discovers Henry is actually Henrietta—a no nonsense woman who believes in the value of life, no matter the person’s chosen occupation.

Henry, who has worked long and hard to earn the trust of the locals when it comes to treating the valued animal population, isn’t about to waste her time and attention on an arrogant, judgmental male who spends the majority of his time pulling his foot from his mouth.

Soon after inspecting the dead soiled dove, it becomes clear to Henry they may be dealing with a serial killer—and if they don’t stop him, more women will die. As the two travel the territory, they come to know and appreciate each other for their many skills. Just as Henry and Tanner reach a certain degree of mutual respect, the killer is exposed after attacking Henry, setting off a series of events which forever alters the rest of their lives.

Our Review:  as with her previous novels, author Payne offers the same detailed research readers have come to expect, bringing realism to each novel, each character. In the case of The Texas Ranger and the Veterinarian,  Payne delves into in-depth descriptions of physical ailments and the accepted treatments of the day. Fans of the history of medical care through the centuries, as well as the forensics of serial killers, will enjoy this book very much.

On a scale of 1-5, The Texas Ranger and the Veterinarian deserves a 4.
